Gynecomastia

50% of all men face the problem of breast development or gynecomastia, which is actually quite normal. Some men experience this as a discomfort in their daily life and therefore consider undergoing a male breast reduction .

Gynecomastia: the causes

In order to guarantee a successful surgery, the surgeon needs to examine the underlying cause of gynecomastia.
Breast development with men is actually quite normal seeing that men are born with a full breast, milk glands and milk ducts included.
Obesity is usually the cause of (excessive) breast development. In this case, the breast is mainly filled with fatty tissue.
Other possible causes of gynecomastia are hormonal problems, medication or exposure to certain products.

Gynecomastia: the procedure

Gynecomastia can be executed in different ways, depending on the size of the breast development.
When there is excess skin, the surgeon uses the technique of a male breast reduction . This technique leaves scars and is therefore seldom applied. Usually, the surgeon uses a technique that leaves no visible scars.
A second possibility is the removal of fat by means of a liposculpture . This is the easiest way to solve the problem but it has no effect when the skin is stretched out of when there is firm glandular tissue.
The third, most common and efficient method is a twofold procedure: removal of subcutaneous glandular tissue and a liposculpture . This procedure takes about one to one and a half hour and is done under general anaesthesia. Detaching and removing the excess mammary gland tissue is done subcutaneously, so that the scar is the least visible.
